What type of blood cells are classified as erythrocytes?

Erythrocytes are specifically defined as red blood cells, which play a crucial role in the circulatory system. Their primary function is to transport oxygen from the lungs to the body’s tissues and carry carbon dioxide back to the lungs for exhalation. Erythrocytes contain hemoglobin, a protein that binds oxygen, allowing them to effectively perform this gas exchange. They are characterized by their biconcave shape, which increases their surface area to volume ratio, facilitating efficient gas transport.

The other types of blood cells, while important, do not classify as erythrocytes. White blood cells, for example, are part of the immune system and help the body fight infections. Platelets are involved in blood clotting and wound repair, while antibodies are proteins produced by immune cells that identify and neutralize pathogens.
